Map Help

This map is designed to provide access to public comments submitted during the Forest Planning Study Group process. The data have been included in 9 layers, which are turned off by default, but each can be turned on to provide data access by following the instructions below.

Layers/Legend
The Layers/Legend column appears on the right side of the map and only one can appear at a time, either Layers or Legend. The Layers column displays by default. The Layers column shows a list of the data layers, e.g., lakes, streams, roads, etc, that comprise the map. There is also a Legend that does not appear by default. The Legend shows all of the map symbols. View the Legend by clicking on the Layers/Legend Toggle button.

The map is made up of many layers of data. Any layer can be turned off or on by clicking the checkbox next to the layer in the Layers column, then click the "Refresh Map" button. In order to perform operations on a layer, e.g., selecting features, performing queries, finds, and using the Information Tool, the layer must be active. Only one layer can be activated at a time by clicking on the "Active" radio button next to the layer in the Layers column.

Data Organization
Comments were submitted in the Study Group process in four categories:

  1. Outstanding Features
  2. Primary Uses
  3. Opportunities
  4. Concerns

Comments were provided for each of the 40 study areas or landscapes. There are two ways comments were submitted: either as general landscape comments or as spatially specific comments, i.e., pertaining to a specific location within the landscape.

General comments can be accessed in the polygon layers entitiled:

  1. Landscape Outstanding Features
  2. Landscape Primary Uses
  3. Landscape Opportunities
  4. Landscape Concerns

Spatially specific comments can be accessed in the point layers entitled:

  1. Outstanding Features Points
  2. Primary Uses Points
  3. Opportunities Points
  4. Concerns Points

Data Access
There are several ways data can be accessed.

For general landscape comments:

  • The Information Tool . First select the desired layer by clicking the checkbox next to the layer in the layers list (located on the right side of the map). Click the refresh button at the bottom of the layers list. Next, click the "Active" radio button next to the layer that was just selected. Then click on the Information Tool located in the toolbar to the left of the map. By clicking on any landscape polygon you will get a list of general comments provided for that landscape.
  • The Find Tool . First select the desired layer by clicking the checkbox next to the layer in the layers list (located on the right side of the map). Click the refresh button at the bottom of the layers list. Next, click the "Active" radio button next to the layer that was just selected. Then click on the Find Tool located in the toolbar to the left of the map. A search box will appear. Type in a search term, such as "ATV" to find all comments made regardings ATV's for the whole layer, i.e., all 40 landscapes.
  • The Query Tool . The query tool is more complex and it is helpful to have some knowledge of SQL (Structured Query Language). It also allows more flexible queries than the two methods above. A query dialog box will appear and helps in designing the SQL statement. A sample statement would be:
landscape = "Hermosa" AND Concern = "ATV"
This query would find all of the comments made regarding the Durango landscape where the concern Type equals "ATV".

For spatially specific comments:

  • The Information Tool . First select the desired layer by clicking the checkbox next to the layer in the layers list (located on the right side of the map). Click the refresh button at the bottom of the layers list. Next, click the "Active" radio button next to the layer that was just selected. Then click on the Information Tool located in the toolbar to the left of the map. By clicking on any of the points you will get the comment submitted for that point.
The points will be highlighted on the map showing the spatial distirbution of the comments.
  • The Query Tool . The query tool is more complex and it is helpful to have some knowledge of SQL (Structured Query Language). It also allows more flexible queries than the two methods above. A query dialog box will appear and helps in designing the SQL statement. A sample statement would be:
landscape = "Hermosa" AND Concern = "ATV"
This query would find all of the comments made regarding the Durango landscape where the concern Type equals "ATV". The points will be highlighted on the map showing the spatial distirbution of the comments.

Themes Layer
The Themes Layer shows a draft of current management theme being considered within the study area. For more information on Management Themes click here.
